At a considered healthy size of AU12, I wasn’t over weight. The little aches and pains and any sickness I got I thought was just 'normal' for me or an inevitable and unchangeable part of getting older.
I used to think it was just 'normal’ for me to get regular headaches, bad PMS symptoms every month, have up and down moods, frequent colds and sinus pain. For as long as I can remember I had always been that way – so it was just the ‘normal’ and I dealt with it (admittedly with a fair bit of paracetamol). From around 23 I also started getting back pain. I was x-rayed and was told by a doctor it would be something I'd need to manage and live with my whole life. We learn to ‘live’ with lots of things don’t we?
At age 36 my low moods that came with any and every of life's little challenges was becoming debilitating and affecting my family. I decided that there had to be a better way to live and surely there was something I could do to change.
As for many people it unfortunately usually takes a crisis for them to implement change. At the beginning of 2013 that defining crisis struck when my husband developed a serious bone infection. This was the last straw after 18 months of an already nightmare roller coaster recovery from a serious fall. I decided that it was time to take more control and responsibility; it was time to start implementing what I had been learning about. My husband was ready to do anything to avoid a 7th operation so agreed to my suggestions. I had been hearing enough that I knew that cutting down sugar and grains would give the infection less to feed off. So that's where we started.
When he got out of hospital we decided together to try full ‘gluten-free’ as an experiment, by eliminating the grain parts of the meals and checking ingredients on sauces etc. WOW within a few weeks we were feeling amazing. ‘Fogginess’ had lifted, we were sleeping better, I'd lost 4 kilos without trying and the big thing was my moods had improved! We knew we were onto something.
As I learned more we made more changes cleaning up our diet and implementing lifestyle changes for our young son and ourselves. We started listening to our bodies. If we didn’t feel right – we would look at what we had eaten that day and the day before. I let go of my life-long belief that I had to eat a low fat diet and started enjoying lots of yummy good fats with everything! We started eating as close to nature as possible, focusing on nutrient dense foods and the quality and variety of them. Lifestyle changes included regular chiropractic adjustments, spending more time outdoors and lower-toxin living.

My husband’s bone infection has gone. He has made a great recovery allowing his body to heal itself with results far greater than when he was on medication and eating a modern diet and is now back working.
Learning is continuous. I still love listening to podcasts; there are so many good ones now it is too hard to keep up!! I'm currently studying Cyndi O’Meara’s Changing Habits Nutrition Course and feel like I have found my true path as a wellness mentor.
I'm passionate about inspiring and empowering the everyday person to make positive food and lifestyle changes. This way of eating and living really can be enjoyable, achievable and sustainable. Take change one step at a time, understand the whys behind each step, embrace and enjoy it, embed it into your normal life, then take another step forward.
For the last two years we have been gluten-free and followed the basic Paleo template that we have tweaked to individually suit our family. That initial 'wellness' search and finding 'The Wellness Guys' and 'Up for a Chat' podcasts has been life changing.
